How to write a caption that doesn't sound like everyone else's

Scroll any small business feed for five minutes and you'll notice the same handful of phrases everywhere. "Excited to announce." "We're passionate about." "Here at [business], we believe." None of it is wrong, exactly. It's just invisible, because everyone's saying it.

Here's how to write a caption that actually sounds like a person instead of a brand template.

Cut the opener everyone uses

"Excited to share" and "we're thrilled to announce" are the caption equivalent of clearing your throat before you say nothing. Just say the thing. "We're open Saturdays now" does more work than three sentences of preamble.

Write like you're texting one specific person

Not your whole audience, one person. A regular customer, a friend who'd actually care. It naturally strips out the stiff, broadcast tone and replaces it with something that sounds like you talking, because it is.

Say the specific thing, not the general thing

"We use quality ingredients" tells the reader nothing. "We make the sauce from scratch every morning, no shortcuts" tells them something they can picture. Specificity is what separates a caption that gets scrolled past from one that gets read.

Let your actual opinions show up

A caption with a real point of view, even a small one, reads as more human than one that's carefully neutral. You don't have to be controversial. You have to sound like someone is actually behind the account.

Read it out loud before you post it

If it sounds like something you'd never actually say to a customer's face, it needs a rewrite. This is the fastest test there is, and almost nobody does it.

The goal was never to sound clever. It was to sound like you. Everything else follows from there.
